Why Collagen?

Happy First Day of FALL friends! The days are getting cooler and the nights are definitely requiring warm jammies and cozy blankets.  One of the most common questions I get here and on IG is about collagen peptides.  What is it? Where do you get it?  Does it taste like anything? Why do you take it?  I’m answering all of these questions right now.

Q:“Why do you take it?”
Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids and are naturally the most abundant protein in the human body.  Collagen supports skin elasticity, joints, cartilage, gut health, bones, and hair.  As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen and lifestyle factors (stress, poor diet) can inhibit our bodies ability to produce collagen.  Collagen peptides are easily digestible natural bio-active ingredient that contains amino acids that are needed to build new collagen.

Q: “Does it taste like anything?”
Not really.  I’m not saying a hard NO because if I were to stir a big scoop into a glass of water, I would be able to taste it.  The three brands I’ve tried: Vital Proteins, Organika, and Bulletproof all have minimal taste to them but are not completely tasteless.

Q: “Do you have a certain brand you can recommend?”
I’ve tried 3 brands so far and I’d have to say my favourite is the Vital Proteins Grass Fed Pasture Raised Collagen Peptides.  I saw the most improvement in my skin and nails while using it and has the least detectable flavour of the three.  The other two brands I have used are Organika (local brand) and Bulletproof, however I do like these brands as well.  What I look for in a brand is that the collagen is sourced from pasture raised, grass fed bovine.  Although, I do want to try the Vital Protens Marine Collagen as I hear it has an even milder taste to it, and now vital proteins has “Beauty Waters” in flavours like Melon-Mint and Lavender-Lemon!

*Alternatively, if you’re vegetarian, vegan, or the thought of drinking animal proteins turns you off, try the Collagen Inner Beauty Boost by Beauty Chef.  I’m actually going to give this one a try once I need a refill so I will update with a review on this one as well.

Q: “Have you noticed any difference in your skin since taking it?”
Yes! Skin, nails, and hair in fact.  It took me a solid month before I could really say for sure if it was making a difference.  My skin looked brighter, more vibrant, and glowy!  My nails are insanely strong, and I’ve started to notice a difference in my hair. It’s growing like crazy and coming in shinier as well, which I desperately need since recently adding some blonde highlights into my already dry locks.

Q: “What do you mix it in?”
My favourite way to take it is in a big smoothie.  It’s truly tasteless and blends seamlessly. If not in a smoothie, I’ll do coffee.  Now, if I am leaving my coffee black (love black coffee), I can taste it however I don’t hate the taste.  Although I’m sure you’re questioning my taste buds now since admitting to enjoying black coffee.  Other ideas are adding to soup, yogurt, chia pudding, baked goods.

*Please remember that I’m not a health professional, all opinions are my own, I’m not sponsored, connected, or affiliated with any of the brands mentioned whatsoever.

I think that covers all the questions, please let me know if I missed anything.

  1. Hi Jayme.

Where do you get your Vital Proteins? I went on their site but it is in US prices. I wanted to get the single serving size. I went onto Amazon Canada and they only have the canisters.

    1. Hi Deborah, I’m so sorry for the delayed response. I don’t know how I missed your comment. I order mine from Amazon US. We live a few minutes from the US border and have a postal box just on the other side for US orders. Sorry about that, were you able to try the Vital Proteins?
